Premium Intumescent Painting

Safeguard Structural Integrity

Service Overview

JMS Painting’s Intumescent Painting service delivers specialised fire-protection solutions designed to safeguard the structural integrity of your building. We apply high-performance coatings that expand under heat to insulate steel structures, preventing collapse during a fire. Whether for a warehouse, high-rise, or commercial complex, we ensure strict compliance with Australian Building Codes and engineering specifications through precise application and measurement.

Our Intumescent Services Include:

  • Fire Rating Compliance: Application systems designed to meet 60, 90, or 120-minute fire resistance levels (FRL) as required by the BCA.
  • Precision Application: Expert coating of structural steel beams, columns, and exposed metalwork using spray, brush, or roller methods.
  • DFT Measurement: Rigorous quality control using Dry Film Thickness (DFT) gauges to ensure the exact required thickness is achieved.
  • Full Documentation: Provision of comprehensive reports, including batch numbers, DFT logs, and certificates for certification.

FAQ

Why is Intumescent Painting necessary?

It is critical for passive fire protection. The coating insulates steel from extreme heat, delaying structural failure and providing vital time for evacuation. It is often a mandatory requirement under the Building Code of Australia (BCA).

How is the fire rating (60/90/120 mins) determined?

The required Fire Resistance Level (FRL) is determined by the building’s design, height, and usage, usually specified by a structural engineer or fire consultant.

How do you verify the thickness of the paint?

We use calibrated DFT (Dry Film Thickness) gauges to measure the coating thickness at various stages, ensuring it meets the manufacturer’s specifications for the required fire rating.

Do you provide certification documents?

Yes. Upon completion, we provide a full handover pack including DFT measurement reports, product batch numbers, and a certificate of application to assist with your building certification.

Can you apply Intumescent paint over existing coatings?

Generally, no. The steel usually requires specific preparation and a compatible primer. We assess the existing surface to determine if it needs to be stripped back to bare metal.

Is it suitable for exterior steel?

Yes, but Intumescent coatings used outdoors or in humid environments require a specific protective topcoat to seal the fire-rated layer against moisture and weather.

What products do you use?

We only use fully certified, market-leading Intumescent products that comply with Australian Standards. We can provide data sheets and Certificates of Analysis (CoA) upon request.
